Ah the Mechwarrior Universe. Mechwarrior is probably the most recognizable "mech" franchise. With the exception of this Mechwarrior game, all others are done in first-person shooter genre. If you are familiar with the Mechwarrior universe, then you should know the basic premise. There are several warring clans in the mechwarrior universe. You are to help one to beat another.
Graphics [8/10]:
The graphics are pretty nice. The enemy units are nicely detailed. The buildings are somewhat generic but the overall feeling is there. Your mech is very detailed. Everything from its shoulder-mounted rocket launchers to its machineguns under the cockpit. The gunfires are represented by blazes and sparks on the building. Rockets have the little trail of air behind it. Explosions are done nicely. Relay messages appear on screen to give you instructions in a very timely manner. Radars work with no fault. Overall, a very visually pleasing experience.
Sound & Music [6/10]:
The Mechwarrior universe in this game is synonymous for a "quiet universe". The music is almost non-existent. Not that you need music of course. You would be satisfied hearing your machineguns fire, your rockets soaring toward its target, as well as the explosions of crumbling buildings.
Gameplay/Fun Factor [8/10]:
Despite its difference in perspective with the other Mechwarrior games, this is still mission-based. You get set missions on what to destroy, what to search. Destination points, convoy attacks, are just a few of the missions you'll get. Think of this game as Mechwarrior in third person perspective. The basic Mechwarrior goodness is still there though. But I couldn't help but the draw comparison between this game and StrikeŽ games. Games by Electronic Arts such as Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, are both similar to this game. Mechwarrior 3050 is basically "Mech Strike" if it were made by EA.
Conclusion/Overall [7.5/10]:
Very good game. I certainly had my share of fun with this. Too bad I didn't have time to finish this game though. If I missed any features in this game, it's only because I was pressed for time. But as far as I know, the features can only increase as you progress along the game.
